Castello di Miramare
V.le Miramare Grignano Trieste
Miramare Castle was built between 1856 and 1860 as a residence for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, later Emperor of Mexico, and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. The archduke personally supervised both the design of the residence and the layout of the vast park (over 22 hectares), an English and Italian-style garden, rich in rare plants, sculptures and ponds, which descends in broad steps towards the sea.
The interior consists of more than 20 rooms: of particular note are the 'Maximilian Rooms', including the bedroom, furnished like a ship's cabin, and the 'Throne Room'. The rooms can be visited according to a pre-established itinerary that runs from the ground floor to the first floor: one can admire the sumptuous original furnishings of the state rooms and the private flats, rich in works of art, furniture and precious objects.
